Stablecoin pools
Pools of USD stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI, crvUSD and others) have the lowest price risk: you are exposed mainly to depeg and contract risk. APY is usually moderate and comes from trading fees plus boosted CRV and CVX.
ETH and liquid staking pools
Pools such as ETH/stETH or other LST pairs hold assets tracking ETH. You keep ETH exposure, earn some staking yield inside the LST plus Convex rewards. Risk: the LST losing its peg.
crvUSD pools
crvUSD pairs often receive strong gauge votes because Curve wants deep crvUSD liquidity. They can offer higher APY, but check the paired stablecoin's quality.
Volatile (crypto) pools
Tri-crypto and other volatile pools pair assets like BTC, ETH and USDT. Rewards are higher, but so is impermanent loss — when prices diverge you can end up worse off than just holding.
How to compare pools
- Split APY into base (fees) and rewards (CRV/CVX/extra tokens).
- Check TVL: tiny pools can show huge but unstable APY.
- Know every token in the pool and its peg risk.
- Prefer pools whose rewards don't depend on one short incentive campaign.
Key takeaways
- Stablecoin pools = lowest price risk.
- High APY usually means higher risk or temporary incentives.
- Compare base vs reward APY and TVL before depositing.
